Brushing Your Dog at Home
Brushing is one of the easiest ways to keep your dog comfortable. It removes loose hair, spreads natural oils through the coat and helps you spot problems early.
How often to brush
- Short, smooth coats: about once a week.
- Medium and double coats: two or three times a week, and daily during spring and fall shedding.
- Long or curly coats: most days, to stop mats from forming.
Use the right tool
A slicker or deshedding brush lifts loose undercoat, while a wide-toothed comb works through tangles. Brush in the direction the hair grows, using short, gentle strokes.
Make it pleasant
Start with short sessions in a quiet spot, use treats and praise, and stop before your dog gets restless. Over time, most dogs learn to enjoy the routine.
Check as you go
Look for ticks, fleas, lumps, red patches or sore spots while you brush. Call your veterinarian about anything new or unusual.
Know when to see a groomer
Heavy mats close to the skin can be painful to remove at home. A professional groomer can help, and can show you how to keep the coat in shape between visits.
